2011. 8. 6. 백두산 천문봉.
백두산 정상부 초원에는 한 뼘이 안 되는 나무와 풀꽃들이 살고 있다.
북백두의 천문봉 보다 낮은 서백두나 노호배에서는 이미 붉은 열매가 여물고 있었는데
이 곳은 고지가 높아지 아직도 늦게 핀 녀석들아 남아 있어서 얼마나 반갑던지
월귤과 함께 진달래과 목본 중에서 제일 작은 녀석이 아닐까 싶다.
한쪽으로만 펼쳐진 5갈래의 꽃잎과 검은 꽃밥이 마치 붉은 얼굴의 원숭이같이 좀 우스꽝스러운 표정이다.
꽃은 지름 2cm정도로 홍색이고 새가지 끝에 1개씩 달리며 화축에 선모가 있고 포엽이 달린다
수술은 10개이고 수술대 기부에 털이 있으며 암술대는 털이 있고 수술보다 짧다.
잎은 총생하고 도란형, 도피침형이며 첨두, 예저이고 길이 5-8cm로서 가장자리에 선상의 털이 밀생하며 엽병이 거의 없다.
줄기가 옆으로 누우며 원줄기에서 뿌리가 돋는다
붉은 페인트 통 속에 빠졌다 나온 것 만큼 강렬한 색인 이 녀석의 열매도 꽃만큼이나 곱다.
