어릴 적 우리는 진달래를 참꽃이라불렀다. 봄이면 참꽃을 꺾으러 산 계곡으로 원행을 하는 게 한 가지 행사였다.
동네에서 한참 떨어진 깊은 산골짜기에는 진달래가 많았다. 그 산골짜기는 호젓하여 문둥이가 살고 있다는 소문이 있었다.
아이들은 잔뜩 겁을 집어 먹고서는 조심조심 꽃을 꺾는데, 장난기 많은 한 녀석이 문둥이가 온다! 라고 소리 지르면
꽃이고 뭐고 줄행랑을 쳤다. 진달래 꽃만 보면 그 기억이 떠올라 혼자 미소 짓는다.
진달래 꽃봉오리가 통통하게 봄을 기다리고 있다.
높이 2-3m이며 소지는 연한 갈색이고 인편이 있다.
꽃은 양성화로 잎이 나기 전 4월 초순경에 피며, 가지끝의 측아에서 1개씩 나오지만 2-5개가 모여 달리기도 하며
화관은 벌어진 깔때기모양이고 5개로 갈라져 있으며 지름 3.0-4.5㎝로서 자홍색 또는 연한 홍색이고 겉에 잔털이 있다.
수술은 10개로서 수술대 기부에 털이 있고 암술대가 수술보다 길다.
열매는 길이 2㎝정도의 삭과로서 원통형이고 10월에 익는다.
잎은 호생하며 길이 4-7cm, 폭 1.5-2.5cm로서 긴 타원상 피침형 또는 도피침형이고 첨두 또는 점첨두이며 예저이고
톱니가 없으며 표면에 인편이 약간 있고 뒷면에는 인편이 밀생하며 엽병은 길이 6-10mm이다.
