만병초를 찾아라~! 탐사 대장의 지령이 떨어졌다.
탐사 대장의 사전 정보에 의하면 이 부근에 만병초 군락이 있단다.
고무나무 잎처럼 주변의 나무들의 잎보다 유난히 크고 가장자리가 말려 있기 때문에
쉽게 눈에 띌거란 기대로 능선 아래 남사면을 살피고 또 살피고
어~! 저기 있다. 다들 시선이 손가락 끝을 따라 돌아가지만
에혀~! 숲 아래 들어갈 수가 있간디? 꽃 송이도 보이지 않는다.
앞 선 일행이 흰인가목을 잡느라 정신 없는 사이에 미련을 버리지 못하고
한발 더 바위 끝으로 다가가서 고개를 내미는 순간,
어라~! 바로 옆에 만병초 잎이 보인다. 손바닥 만한 하얀 꽃송이~!
"이야~~! 만병초다~!" 나도 모르게 내지른 고함 소리에
어디? 어디? 흰인가목을 찍다 말고 다들 되돌아 올라온다. 막 피어서 싱싱하기도 하다. 꽃봉오리까지 조화롭다.
조심조심 나뭇가지를 헤치고 한 사람씩 들어가서 담는 동안 기다리다 못한 두어 분은 옆으로 치고 들어간다.
"아니? 만병초 꽃이 웬 달덩이 같지? "ㅋㅋㅋㅋ....
서로 마주보고 꽃을 담으니 얼굴이 잡힐 수 밖에 ㅎㅎㅎ
꽃이 진달래를 닮았다. 꽃은 7월에 피며 10-20개가 가지 끝에 모여 달리고
화경에 털이 있으며 꽃받침잎은 짧고 5갈래로 갈라진다.
화관은 깔때기 모양으로 백색 또는 연한 황색이며 안쪽 윗면에 녹색 반점이 있다.
수술은 10개로서 길이가 서로 다르고 수술대 기부에 털이 있으며 자방에 갈색털이 밀생하고 암술대에 털이 없다.
잎은 호생하지만 가지끝에서는 5-7개가 총생하며,
타원형 또는 타원상 피침형으로 길이 8-20cm, 폭 2-5cm이다.
표면은 진한 녹색이고 광택이 있으며 주름이 진 것 같고 뒷면에는 회갈색 또는 연한 갈색털이 밀생하며
가장자리에 톱니가 없고 뒤로 말린다. 엽병은 길이 1-3cm로서 회색털이 밀생하지만 없어진다.
높이가 4m에 달하고 어린 가지에 회색털이 밀생하지만 곧 없어지며 갈색으로 변한다.
