높은 산이라 아직도 고운 새색시 분홍저고리 빛 철쭉이 화사하다. 한창 절정일 때는 볼만 했겠다.
높은 산을 끼고 있거나 국립공원을 가지고 있는 지자체마다 매년 6월 쯤 철쭉제를 연다.
그 철쭉제에 등장하는 철쭉이란이란 것은 이 분홍색의 철쭉이 아니라 붉은색으로 피는 산철쭉을 말한다.
정확하게 표기하려면 <철쭉제>가 아니라 <산철쭉제>로 불러야 맞는 말이다.
삭과는 긴 타원상 난원형이며 길이 1.5cm로 선모가 있고 10월에 익는다
열매다.
높이 2-5m이고 어린 가지에 선모가 있으나 없어지며 회갈색으로 된다.
줄기는 직립·생장하지만 굵은 가지를 많이 내고 수피는 연황갈색으로 털이 없다.
