만병초(진달래과)

이태 전 서북능선에서 처음 자생의 만병초를 만나고 환호작약하던 기억이 있다.

이번 설악행에서도 만병초를 기대하고 꾸역꾸역 산을 오르는데 네 시간을 올라도 나타나지를 않는다.

하기사 내 발걸음이 태평스러우니 올라간 거리가 문제이겠지만. 능선에 올라 좌우를 살피면서 전진하느라 속도가 늦다.

 

이맘 때 쯤 산에는 풀꽃이 거의 사라지고 나무 꽃이나 열매만 가득하기 때문에 위를 쳐다보고 살펴야 무어라도 소득이 있다.

만병초는 등산로에서 떨어진 숲 안 쪽을 살펴야 하는데 그나마 잎이 넓고 꽃송이가 커서 눈에 잘 띄어 다행이다.

 

ㅎ...결국 담기에 적당한 녀석을 찾았다. 잔 나무 가지를 헤치고 낑낑거리고 올라서니 꽃송이가 풍성하다.

 

 

  

꽃은 7월에 피며 10-20개가 가지 끝에 모여 달리고 화경에 털이 있으며 꽃받침잎은 짧고 5갈래로 갈라지며, 화관은 깔때기 모양으로 백색 또는 연한 황색이며 안쪽 윗면에 녹색 반점이 있다. 수술은 10개로서 길이가 서로 다르고 수술대 기부에 털이 있으며 자방에 갈색털이 밀생하고 암술대에 털이 없다.

 

 

 

 

 

잎은 호생하지만 가지 끝에서는 5-7개가 총생하며, 타원형 또는 타원상 피침형으로 둔두, 예저이고 길이 8-20cm, 폭 2-5cm이다.

표면은 진한 녹색이고 광택이 있으며 주름이 진 것 같고 뒷면에는 회갈색 또는 연한 갈색털이 밀생하며 가장자리에 톱니가 없고 뒤로 말린다

 

 

 

 

 주변 바닥 이끼에는 큰 나무에서 떨어진 열매가 싹이 터서 자라고 있다.

 

 

 

 

 

높이가 4m에 달하고 어린 가지에 회색털이 밀생하지만 곧 없어지며 갈색으로 변한다.
