제주도에 주로 분포하고 있는데 전남, 경남에서도 자란다고 한다
꽃과 잎이 동시에 5월에 피고 지름 3.5-6.0㎝로서 적색이며 깔대기모양이고 가지 끝에 2-4개씩 달린다.
10개의 수술은 화관보다 짧다. 화경, 꽃받침잎 및 자방에 갈색털이 밀생하고 수술대와 암술대에 털이 없다.
잎은 호생 또는 대생하며 가지 끝에서 2-3개씩 달리고 길이 3.5-8cm로서 넓은 원형, 난상 원형이며
엽병은 길이 5-10㎜로서 갈색털과 강모가 있다.
