섬진달래(진달래과 진달래속) Rhododendron tyaihyonii S.Sakag., H.J.Choi & S.C.Kim

남해의 무인도에서 자생하고 있던 게 발견이 되어 국내 분포가 알려지게 되었다.

식물 전체가 비늘털로 덮여 있다. 잎은 타원형 내지 장타원형이며 만병초 잎과 비슷하다.

 

그런데 후에 연구결과 일본에 자생하는 섬진달래 Rhododendron keiskei var. hypoglaucum와 다른

한국특산종 섬진달래 Rhododendron tyaihyonii 로 확인이 되었다.
