높은 산 너덜지대에 주로 서식한다. 꽃이 폈을까 걱정하면서 올랐는데 딱 한송이 접대용으로 펴 주었다.
고마운 녀석. 그거라도 얼마나 감사한 일인가. 인가목에 비하여 잎과 꽃이 훨씬 작다.
꽃은 5-6월경에 새가지 끝에 1개씩 달리며, 화경에 선모가 있고, 화관은 백색으로 지름 2.5-4cm이며, 꽃받침은 길이 10-15㎝로서 좁고 길다. 열매는 타원형으로 길이 15-20mm이며 꽃받침이 남아 있고 10월에 홍황색으로 성숙한다.
