2시가 넘은 늦은 점심을 짜장면으로 해결하려고 차를 세웠는데
문 앞 작은 주목 나무에 열매가 홍등을 밝히고 있다.
계단에 퍼질러 앉아서 열매를 담고 있는데 안 주인이 뭐하는가 싶어서 기웃거린다.
오랜만에 먹은 짜장면이 꿀맛 같다.
열매는 8-9월에 익으며 컵같은 적색 종의 안에 난형의 종자가 들어 있다.
암수나무가 따로 있는데 암나무는 가을에 동그랗고 빨간 열매가 열리므로 더 아름답다.
잎은 나선상으로 달리지만 옆으로 뻗은 가지에서는 우상으로 보이며 선형이고 길이 1.5-2.5cm, 폭 0.3cm정도로서 끝이 뾰족한 미철두(微凸頭)이며 넓은 예저로서 표면은 짙은 녹색이고 뒷면에 2줄의 연한 황색줄이 있으며 중륵이 양쪽으로 도드라지고 잎이 2-3년만에 떨어진다.
4월에 피며 수꽃은 6개의 인편으로 싸여 있고 8-10개의 수술과 8개의 꽃밥이 있으며, 암꽃은 10개의 인편으로 싸여 있다.

작은 열매가 벌써 자리 잡았다.
