가지 끝에 달린 여러개의 암구화수는 6~10개의 배주 중에서 1~2개가 성숙하여 이듬해 가을에 적갈색으로 익는데
1년이 되어가는 어린 열매를 보면 팥알만 한 게 마치 암구화수가 마악 개화를 하는 것으로 착각을 하게 한다
성숙한 열매의 크기는 길이 2cm정도 된다.
꽃은 이가화로서 4월에 피고 암구화수는 녹색으로 가지 끝에 달리며
길이 5mm로 2송이씩 한군데에 달리고 10여 개의 뾰족한 녹색 포로 싸여 있다.
가지 끝의 동아가 터지면서올해의 암구화수가 나오려면 아직 시간이 필요한 듯 하다
한 해를 넘긴 지난 해 맺힌 어린 열매 모습이다.
잎 뒷면의 분백색 기공선이 비자나무보다 더 넓고 잎은 부드럽다.
