높이가 50m에 달하고 가지는 윤생하며 어린 가지는 밑으로 처지며
밑쪽 가지가 땅에 늘어져 수평으로 넓게 퍼져서 수형이 아름답다. 그래서 정원수로 많이 식재한다.
가문비나무 : 잎모양이 편평한 선형이고, 열매의 길이가 3~7cm 원통 좁은난형이다
독일가문비나무 : 잎모양이 침상 삼각형이고, 열매의 길이가 10~15cm로 원주상 타원형이다
소지에는 털이 없거나 약간 있고 수피는 적갈색이다. 동아는 붉은빛이 돌거나 연한 갈색이고 수지가 없으며
아린 끝이 흔히 젖혀지고 정아 밑에 몇 개의 털이 있는 아린이 있다.
잎은 밀생하고 길이 1-2cm이며 간혹 2.5cm에 달하고 선형, 예두로서 약간 구부러지고 잎의 횡단면은 찌그러진 사각형이다.
표면은 짙은 녹색이며 윤채가 있고 색깔은 담록색이다.
수구화수는 액생하고 길이 2-2.5cm이며, 암구화수는 전년도 가지 끝에 달리고 길이 4-4.5cm 이며 4~5월에 개화한다.
구과는 길이 10-20cm, 직경 3-4㎝로 가문비나무류 중에서는 제일 크고 아래로 처지며 긴 원추형이며 밑을 향해 달리고 길이 10-15cm로서 연한 갈색이지만 익기 전에는 자줏빛이 도는 녹색이다. 10월에 성숙한다.
