섬잣나무(소나무과 소나무속) Pinus parviflora Siebold & Zucc.

2015. 5. 4. 울릉도.

 

섬잣나무라며 대구수목원에 심겨져 있는 녀석들은 일본에서 도입해서 심겨진 녀석으로 섬잣나무와 다른 녀석이다

 

울릉도에서 섬잣나무를 제대로 살펴 본 적이 없었기 때문에

수목원에 이름표를 달고 있는 그 잎이 짧은 일본오엽송을 섬잣나무로 입력이 되어 버렸었다.

 

그래서 지난 번 근무하던 학교  정원의 일본오엽송을 섬잣나무라 믿고 있었더랬다.

꽃동무가 섬잣나무가 아니라 일본오엽송이라고 했어도 대구수목원에 섬잣나무라 심겨진 녀석과 같은 녀석이라 우겨 대었었다.

 

그래서 이번에 울릉도에 가면 꼭 섬잣나무를 확인해야 겠다고 벼르고 있었는데

자생의 섬잣나무는 만나지 못하고 울릉 자생식물원에 심겨진 섬잣나무를 쳐다 보면서 그 실체를 확인하였는데......

 

울릉도의 산 능선부나 경사가 급한 바위지대에 자생한다는 섬잣나무는

일본에서 도입해서 조경수로 심겨진 녀석보다 잎이 더 길었고 열매도 훨씬 더 컸다.

결국  대구수목원에 일본 도입종이 납품되어 식재되어 있었는데 그 때문에 섬잣나무란 녀석을 잘못 알게 되어 버렸던 거였다.

 

이 곳에서 섬잣나무를 관찰하고 나서 도동 주변을 걸어 다니다 보니

가로수와 관광지 주변 조경수로 섬잣나무를 많이 심어 놓았다.

 

자생식물원에서 살펴본 녀석들은 수구화수가 드물게 맺히고 있었는데 암구화수를 아무리 찾아도 보이 않는다.

새순 끝에 암구화수가 달리는데 아마도 아직 맺히지 않았는 것 같다.
