학교 뒷쪽 언덕 비탈에 잣나무 30여 주 정도 심겨져 있다. 잣 열매가 달리는 걸 보니 이십 년 이상 된 것 같다.
매년 십수 송이 정도 잣을 수확했단다. 올해도 나무마다 3~4 송이의 잣이 달렸는데
청설모가 오르락 내리락 하면서 가을 내도록 분주하게 다니더니만 몇 송이 보이지도 않는다.
나무 껍질에 진이 많기도 하고 그거 수확해 봐야 입맛 버릴 정도 밖에 되지 않을 것 같아서 그냥 두었다.

꽃은 일가화로서 5월에 피며 수꽃은 5-6개의 웅화수가 새가지 밑에 달리고 암꽃은 2-5개의 자화수가 가지 끝에 달린다.
암꽃은 녹황색으로 피고 수꽃은 루비와 같이 붉은색으로 핀다. 새 가지 눈이다.
잎은 5개씩 속생하며 3개의 능선이 있고 길이 7~12cm로 양면에 백색 기공조선이 5~6줄 있으며 가장자리에 잔톱니가 있다.
횡단면의 수지구는 3개로서 내위(內位)이다.
구과는 긴 난형 또는 원통상 난형으로서 길이 12~15cm, 지름 6~8cm이고 실편 끝이 길게 자라서 뒤로 젖혀진다.
종자는 일그러진 삼각형, 긴 난형 또는 난형으로서 날개가 없으며 양면에 얇은 막이 있고 길이 12-18mm, 지름 12mm로서 식용으로 한다.
다음해 9월에 익으며
한 실편에 한 개의 잣이 결실하여 한 구에 약 100개의 잣이 생산된다.
우리나라에 자생하고 있는 소나무류 중에서 구과가 제일 크다. 조림 후 약 20년이 지나야 솔방울이 달린다.
올해 달린 어린 잣송이가 꼭대기에 보인다. 내년 9월이 되면 익는다.
올해 결실한 잣송이다.
높이 30m, 지름 1m에 달하고 수피는 암갈색이며 불규칙한 조각의 껍질이 있다. 어린가지에는 잔털이 있다.
재질이 좋으며 심재가 연한 홍색이므로 홍송이라고도 한다.
