가지 끝에 매달린 솔방울이 귀여운 솔송나무가 역시 조롱조롱 노란 솔방울을 달고 있다.
작년에는 바삐 다니느라 한 그루만 보았더니 소나무원에 솔송나무가 여러 그루가 있다.
한국에서는 울릉도에 자생한다고 한다.
구과는 황갈색으로 타원형 또는 난형이고 길이 20-25mm, 지름 15mm로서 대가 있으며
가지 끝에 1개씩 매달려서 아래로 드리워지며 10월에 익는다.
꽃은 자색으로 5월에 피며 암수한그루이다. 수꽃은 위를 향하고, 암꽃은 가지 끝에서 아래를 향하여 달린다.
어린 솔방울인가 싶어 무심히 보다가 자세히 보니 가지 끝에 꽃봉오리도 보인다.
수꽃은 위를 향하여 피고 암꽃을 아래를 향한다, 지금 맺혀 있는 것은 수꽃이다..
잎은 선형이고 길이 1~2cm, 폭 2.5~3.0mm로서 거의 2줄로 배열되며 미요두이며 표면은 윤채가 있는 진녹색이고
뒷면에 2줄의 흰색 기공조선이 있으며 끝이 오목하고 엽병은 뚜렷하며 길이 1mm이다.
높이가 30m에 달하고 가지가 수평으로 퍼지고, 수피는 적갈색 또는 회갈색이며 노목에서는 세로로 갈라져 떨어진다.
수관이 난상 원형이다. 소지는 털이 없으며 다갈색 또는 황갈색이고 동아는 난상 원형이며 첨두로서 털이 없다
