곶자왈이나 오름 계곡, 귤 과수원 방풍림으로 심기도하여 흔하게 만날 수 있는 상록수이다.
이 녀석 노랗게 꽃이 피는 건 한 번 담은 적이 있다.
그런데 이상하게도 이 녀석 열매와는 인연이 없었는지 열매를 이번에 처음으로 담았다.
작년에도 화순곶자왈을 헤메면서 열매를 찾았지만 전혀 보이지 않더니 올해는 아주 풍성하게 열렸다.
마치 사랑의 열매처럼 붉은 열매가 하도 반가워서 가는 곳마다 담고 또 담았다.
잎자루 가까이 뚜렷한 3맥이 녹나무과임을 알려준다.
엽신은 긴 타원형, 난상 피침형 또는 피침형이고 점첨두 예저이며 길이 7~18cm, 넓이 4~7㎝로서
가장자리가 밋밋하고 어린잎은 밑으로 처지며 황갈색 털이 밀생하지만 점차 없어지고 3출맥이 있으며 뒷면은 백색으로 되고
잎자루는 길이 2~3.5cm로서 연한 갈색 털이 있으나 점차 없어진다.
열매는 다음 해 새 꽃이 필 때 쯤 7월 중순 ~ 11월 중순에 적색으로 익고 꽃자루는 길이 8~12mm이다
전년지는 녹색인데 올해 자란 오른쪽 1년지는 누런 융모로 덮혀 있다.
꽃은 암수딴그루로 9월말 ~ 11월 중순에 피며 황백색이고 화경이 없는 산형꽃차례에 꽃이 밀착하며 꽃차례에 갈색 털이 밀생한다.
10월 쯤 꽃이 피어 달린 어린 열매다. 내년 이맘 때 쯤 붉게 익는다
