곶자왈에서 참식나무 열매를 찾아다녔지만 그리 흔하게 달리지는 않은 모양이다.
지난 해에는 많이도 열렸었다는데 참식나무 뿐만 아니라 올해는 전반적으로 나무 열매들의 결실이 잘 안 된 것 같다.
4월까지 꽃샘추위가 심하고 눈이 내린 탓에 꽃이 충실하게 피지 못한 때문으로 추측이 된다.
열매는 꼭대기에 겨우 몇 개 보일 정도여서 잎만 담고 발걸음 돌려야 했다.
잎은 호생하고 혁질이며 새로
돋아나는 잎은 마치 죽은 잎처럼 난다
. 엽신은 긴 타원형, 난상 피침형 또는 피침형이고 점첨두 예저이며 길이 7~18cm, 넓이 4-7㎝로서 가장자리가 밋밋하고
어린잎은 밑으로 처지며 황갈색 털이 밀생하지만
점차 없어지고 3출맥이 있으며
뒷면은 백색으로
되고
엽병은 길이 2-3.5cm로서 연한 갈색 털이 있으나 점차 없어진다
.
높이가 10m에 달하며 줄기는 곧게 자라고 수피는 암회색으로 평활하며 소지는 녹색이고 털이 점차 없어진다.
