참식나무와 식나무는 같은 과인 줄 알았더니 참식나무는 녹나무과 식나무는 층층나무과로 완전히 다른 집안이다.
이번에 제대로 만난 식나무를 관찰한 결과 잎의 거치와 꽃차례가 완전히 다르니 같은 과일 수는 없겠다.
식나무 잎에 불규칙한 노란 점 무늬가 많은 것을 금식나무라 하는데 화분에 심어서 판매하는 걸 본 적이 있어서
원예종인 줄 알았더니 우리 나라에도 일부 섬지역에 금식나무가 군생을 한다고 한다.
이 오름은 용암이 분출하면서 오름 한 쪽이 터져 아래로 쓸려 내려가면서 함몰 지대가 길게 생성되었다
그래서 이 오름은 마치 키 모양을 하고 있다.
아무튼 이 오름의 식나무 군락은 대단하다. 암자색의 꽃이 필 때 볼 기회가 있었으면 좋겠다.
벌써 꽃눈이 옷을 벗고 꽃봉오리가 터질 준비를 하고 있다.
빠르면 3월 말 쯤 꽃이 만개를 할 것 같다.
꽃은 이가화로서 3~4월에 피고 지름 8mm이며 4수이고 줄기 끝의 원추화서에 달리며 화축에 털이 있고
암꽃은 길이 5-8cm의 화서에 달리며 꽃잎은 난형이고 길이 2mm이며 검은 자주색이고 자방은 타원형으로서 털이 있다
어린 가지는 녹색으로 털이 없으며 윤채가 있고 마디가 불룩하게 발달되어 있다.
잎은 대생하고 타원상 난형 또는 타원상 피침형이며 예두 또는 점첨두이고 넓은 예저이며 길이 5-20cm, 나비 2-10cm로서
양면에 털이 없고 표면은 윤채가 있으며 가장자리에 치아상의 톱니가 있고 엽병은 길이 2-5㎝로서 표면에 얕은 홈이 있다.
높이가 3m에 달하고 소지는 녹색이며 굵고 털이 없으며 윤채가 있다.
