이상하게도 하얀 암술 때문에 흰새덕이로 알고 있는 암술이 발달한 새덕이는 흔하게 보이는데 수그루를 만난 적이 없다.
어느 농원에 갔다가 주인에게 혹시 새덕이나무 꽃술이 하얗게 피는 걸 봤냐고 물으니
이 곳의 새덕이는 하얀 꽃술을 가진 게 없다고 한다.
옳다꾸나 싶어서 한 바퀴를 도는데 새덕이 나무가 몇 그루 보인다.
주인의 말 대로 이 녀석은 온통 붉은색 투성이었고
루뻬로 들여다 보니 붉은 수술 꽃밥주머니가 터져서 꽃가루가 노랗게 달려 있는 게 보이고 가운데 흰 머리를 가진 암술이 하나 보인다.
이제사 수그루를 제대로 만났다. 이 녀석은 양성화인데 암꽃보다 꽃차례가 크며
수술이 길게 발달하여 있고 가운데 길이가 짧은 암술이 흔적적으로 있는데 결실하지는 않는다.
잎겨드랑이에 여러 개의 덩어리를 이루고 있는 산형꽃차례가 있는데
하나의 덩어리에는 4~5개의 꽃이 뭉쳐져 있고 1개의 꽃은 붉은색 화피가 4개이고
길다란 수술대를 가진 수술 끝에 붉은 꽃밥주머리가 있고 주머니가 터지면서 노란 꽃가루가 날린다
가운데 흰 암술머리를 가진 1개의 암술이 있지만 길게 발달하지 않았고 매우 짧다.
