제주 삼다 중에 하나인 바람은 삼나무라는 방풍림 숲을 만들어 관광객들에게 이국적인 정취를 느끼게 하고 있다.
요즈음은 그 방풍림으로 까마귀쪽나무, 참식나무 같은 상록수들이 더러 심겨진 걸 볼 수 있다.
서귀포 쪽 귤밭 근처를 지나는데 참식나무가 생강나무 꽃 같은노란꽃을 한창 피우고 있다.
상록수 중에서 가을에 꽃을 피우는 종류가 더러 있는데,
보리밥나무, 상동나무도 노란 꽃을 피우고 까마귀쪽나무는 벌써 어린 열매가 달려 있다.
잠시 차를 세우고 참식나무 꽃을 담았다.
카메라 조작이 잘못된 채로 담아서 시퍼렇게 나왔지만 버리기에는 아까운 자료라서 이제라도 올려 본다.
꽃은 이가화로 10~11월에 피며 황백색이고 화경이 없는 산형화서에 꽃이 밀착하며 화서에 갈색 털이 밀생한다.
화피는 얕은 종형이고 4개로 깊게 갈라지며 수꽃은 수술이 8개, 암꽃은 편평한 암술머리를 가진 암술이 1개이다
잎은 호생하고 혁질이며 새로 돋아나는 잎은 마치 죽은 잎처럼 난다.
엽신은 긴 타원형, 난상 피침형 또는 피침형이고 점첨두 예저이며 길이 7~18cm, 넓이 4-7㎝로서 가장자리가 밋밋하다.
어린잎은 밑으로 처지며 황갈색 털이 밀생하지만 점차 없어지고 3출맥이 있다.
뒷면은 백색으로 되고 엽병은 길이 2-3.5cm로서 연한 갈색 털이 있으나 점차 없어진다
높이가 10m에 달하며 줄기는 곧게 자라고 수피는 암회색으로 평활하며 소지는 녹색이고 털이 점차 없어진다.
