정금나무는 아직 꽃봉오리 상태다.
꽃은 6-7월에 피고 새가지 끝에 총상으로 달려 처지며 선모와 잔털이 있고 포는 피침형 또는 좁은 난형이며 예첨두이고
길이 4-7mm로서 열매가 달릴 때까지 일부분이 남아 있으며 소화경은 길이 1-3mm이다.
잎은 호생하며 타원형, 긴타원형 또는 난형으로 첨두, 넓은 예저이고 길이 3-8cm, 폭 2-4cm이며 톱니끝이 선모상으로 된다. 어린 잎은 붉은빛이 돌며 양면 맥 위에 털이 있고 표면 맥 위에 털이 있거나 없으며 엽병은 길이 1-2.5cm로서 짧은 털이 있다. 가을철에 잎이 적색으로 변한다.
