정금나무는 중부 이북에서는 만난 적이 없는 걸 보면 남부에서 자라는 것 같다.
가야산에서 보았고 금오산에서 담은 사진을 구경했으니 내가 아는 기준으로 그리 생각할 수 밖에 없다. ㅎㅎ.
마침 구미에 갈 일이 생겨서 금오산 정금나무 열매를 담을까 했는데 산에 가지 않고도 편하게 열매를 담아왔다.
자생지가 아니라 아쉽지만 야생의 정금나무 꽃과 열매는 다음 기회로 미루어 둔다.
열매는 둥글고 지름 6-8mm 정도이며 백분으로 덮이며 9월에 흑자색으로 익는데, 맛이 감미롭고 시다.
잎은 호생하며 타원형, 긴타원형 또는 난형으로 첨두, 넓은 예저이고,
어린 잎은 붉은빛이 돌며 양면 맥 위에 털이 있다.
가을철에 잎이 적색으로 변한다.
가지는 무성하고 짙은 갈색이며 햇가지는 회갈색으로 선모(腺毛)가 있다.
