붉은 줄기와 잎자루 적당하게 결각이 진 잎이 참 고운 녀석이다.
잎자루가 엽신 아래쪽 1/4 지점 쯤 안쪽에 붙어 있다.
국생종 기재문을 보면 일가화라고 되어 있다. 헌데 내가 살펴 본 걸로는 암꽃이 피는 녀석과 수꽃이 피는 녀석이 다른 걸로 관찰된다.
오늘도 이곳에서는 수꽃이 전혀 발견되지 않았다. 여태껏 담으면서도 수꽃이 무성한 덩굴에서 암꽃을 본 적이 없으니까.
같은 방기과인 함박이도 잎의 결각은 없지만 엽신 안쪽에 줄기가 붙어 있고 열매가 참 고운 녀석이다.
함박이도 일가화로 되어 있는데 좀 의심스럽다.
잎은 호생하며 첨두 심장저이고 3-7각이거나 가장자리가 밋밋하며 길이와 폭이 각각 5-13cm로서 표면은 녹색이고 뒷면은 흰빛이 돌며 털이 없다. 엽병은 길이 3-10㎜로서 가장자리에서 6-10㎜ 떨어져 방패처럼 달려 있다.
수꽃은 꽃받침잎이 4-6개, 꽃잎이 6-10개, 수술은 12-20개이고 암꽃은 3개의 심피와 암술대가 2개로 갈라진 1개의 암술이 있다.
