시무나무(느릅나무과)

 김삿갓 김병연이 함경도 지방의 어느 부잣집에서 냉대를 받고 나그네의 설움을 한문 숫자 새김을 이용하여 표현한 시이다.  

二十樹下三十客 四十家中五十食 이십수하삼십객 사십가중오십식 人間豈有七十事 不如歸家三十食 인간개유칠십사 불여귀가삼십식

스무나무 아래 서른 나그네가 마흔 집안에서 쉰 밥을 먹네. 인간 세상에 어찌 일흔 일이 있으랴. 차라리 집으로 돌아가 서른 밥을 먹으리라.=>

스무나무 아래 서러운 나그네가 망할 놈의 집안에서 쉰 밥을 먹네. 인간 세상에 어찌 이런 일이 있으랴. 차라리 집으로 돌아가 선 밥을 먹으리라

 

내가 말하려는 건 김삿갓에 대한 야그가 아니다.

 

싯귀를 풀어 놓은 걸 보면

<< 二十樹 : 스무나무는 느릅나무과에 속하는 나무 이름 >> 이라고만 되어 있다.

 

김삿갓의 싯귀 처음에 나오는 스무나무란 게 바로 느릅나무과 시무나무를 말할 거다.

그 스무나무는 스무나무가 아니라 시무나무를 음원상 그리 표현한 거라 생각이 든다.

  

병산서원 앞 둑방 아래를 어정거리다가 시무나무 꽃이 활작 폈길래 반갑게 담았다.  역시 느릅나무과 꽃의 특징이 보인다.

하얀 혓바닥 처럼 생긴 암술이 두 갈래, 4개의 수술로 이루어진 암꽃이 보인다. 암술이 없는 게 수꽃이다.  

 

시무나무에는 커다란 가시가 움찔하게 만든다. 

5cm 가 넘는 큰 가시는 어릴 적 골뱅이 알을 빼 먹는데 아주 요긴하게 쓰였다.

엄니가 골뱅이를 삶아 주시면 우리는 뒷산으로 달려가서 시무나무 가시를 따 오곤 했었다

 

 

 

이 녀석 잎이 돋을 때 탁엽이 마치 꽃 같아서 꽃봉오리인 줄 착각을 했던 게 생각난다. ㅎ(4월18일)
