지난 해 여름 100원짜리 동전만한 커다란 열매가 달린 걸 보고 왕느릅나무가 이 곳에 있는 걸 알았었다.
올 봄 누른괭이눈이 궁금하야 들렀더니 왕느릅나무가 가지끈 꽃을 피우고 있었다.
느릅나무보다 꽃도 확실하게 크다. 암술을 잡으려고 바람에 흔들리는 가지 부여 잡고 눈 씨름 했더니 어질어질하다.
수술대 끝에 자색의 꽃밥을 달고 있는 고불고불한 수술대 사이에 하얀 털의 오리 주둥이 같이 생긴 암술이 2갈래로 갈라져 있다.
느릅나무 잔가지에는 융모로 덮혀 있지만 왕느릅나무 잔가지에는 융모가 없다.
수고가 20m 는 족히 됨직한 녀석이었다.
