시무나무(느릅나무과) 열매

어린 시절 시무나무 가시를 꺾어서 다슬기 알을 빼먹을 때 사용하곤 했다. 느릅나무과 교목으로 키가 20m에 달하며 가지에 큰 가시가 나 있는 것이 특징이다. 한국에서는 함경북도를 제외한 전국 저지대의 계곡이나 하천변에서 자란다.

잎은 어긋나는데 가장자리에는 비교적 모양이 고른 톱니가 있다. 연한 노란색의 꽃은 5월 무렵 암꽃과 수꽃이 한그루에 같이 피거나 여기에 양성화가 섞여 피며 꽃의 크기는 1~2㎜ 정도로 아주 작다. 열매는 10월에 한쪽 방향으로만 날개가 발달한 시과(翅果)로 익는다.
