비술나무(느릅나무과 느릅나무속) Ulmus pumila L.

3월에는 잎도 나기 전 느릅나무 식구들이 동글동글 꽃차례에서 꽃밥을 터뜨리기 시작한다.
 
강원도 영월, 단양, 경북 영양 지역의 하천변에는 비술나무가 흔하게 자라고 있다.
느릅나무에 비하여 잔가지가 가늘어서 약간 휘어지는 듯한 느낌이 있고
국내의 느릅나무속 중에서 잎이 가장작고 느릅나무보다 꽃차례가 작고 꽃밥이 어두운 흑자색을 띤다.
 
취산꽃차례에 양성화가 뭉쳐서 난다. 수술이 4~5개이고 암술을 2갈래로 갈라지며 백색털이 있다.
 
멀리서 보면 잔가지들이 희뿌연 색을 띠고 있어서 주변의 나무들과 구분이 된다.
 

수술이 말라서 비틀어질 때 쯤 2갈래로 갈라진 암술이 잘 드러난다
