당느릅나무(느릅나무과 느릅나무속) Ulmus davidiana Planch.

열매 표면에 털이 있어서 근연종과 구분되는 녀석이다.
두어번 자료를 촬영한 적은 있었지만 별 관심두지 않고 있었는데 이 녀석을 찾아야 할 일이 생겼다. 느릅나무 열매가 한창 달려 있을 시기라서 이 녀석만 보면 가지를 당겨서 열매를 확인하는데 강원도 대관령 고갯마루로 오르는 길에서 여러 개체들을 확인할 수 있었다.
 
<당느릅나무>

중부 이북의 산기슭이나 골짜기에 자라는 낙엽 큰키나무다. 높이 15m에 이르며, 수피는 회갈색, 세로로 갈라지며, 가지는 코르크 돌기가 발달하며, 새 가지는 녹색 또는 붉은색으로 잔털이 있다. 잎몸은 난형, 끝이 꼬리 모양으로 길고 뾰족하며, 밑부분은 좌우가 다른 모양이고, 가장자리는 겹톱니가 있다. 꽃은 3~4월에 잎보다 먼저 핀다. 열매는 시과, 길이 10-15mm 둥근 도란형이며, 씨가 있는 부분에 부드럽고 짧은 털이 있다. 중국 동북부 지방에 분포한다

 
<중느릅나무>란 녀석이 있는데 아직 확인한 바가 없다
생물자원관 포털의 기재문이다.

열매는 시과로서 타원형이고 길이 1.7~2.0cm, 폭 1.3~1.7cm, 흰 털이 약간 있다. 날개는 종자를 중심으로 삥 둘러싼다. 열매자루는 3cm이다.(3mm 오타가 아닐까?) 우리나라 강원도 설악산에 분포하는 한국 고유종이다. 이 종은 열매의 길이가 1.6~2.1cm로 비교적 크고, 잎몸 뒷면에 거친 털이 있는 반면, 느릅나무는 열매의 길이가 1.5cm 이하로 작고, 잎몸 뒷면에 부드러운 털이 있는 점에서 구별한다. 또한 싹과 화피의 가장자리에 갈색 털이 있고, 수술과 화피가 각각 4~5개인 반면, 왕느릅나무는 싹과 화피의 가장자리에 흑갈색 털이 있고, 수술과 화피가 각각 6~7개인 점에서 구별한다.
