제주도 겨울 도로변을 곱게 장식해 주는 먼나무이다.
삭막한 가로에 윤기 있는 두터운 상록 잎과 자잘한 열매로 한결 훈기가 돈다
이 녀석 이름도 재미 있지만 아랫녘에는 참 재미 있는 나무 이름이 많다.
<돈나무> <비쭈기나무><아왜나무> 등은 남쪽의 상록수들로 독특한 이름을 가지고 있다.
잎은 혁질이며 타원형 또는 긴 타원형이고 예두 예저이며 길이 4-11cm, 나비 3-4cm로서 양면에 털이 없고
중륵이 표면에서는 들어가며 뒷면에서는 도드라지고 가장자리가 밋밋하며 마르면 갈색으로 되고 엽병은 길이 12-28mm이다.
높이가 10m에 달하고 수피는 녹갈색, 가지는 털이 없고 암갈색이다.
수고 10m 까지 자란다.
