완도호랑가시나무(감탕나무과) Ilex × wandoensis C.F.Mill. & M.Kim

몇년 전까지만 해도 늘 화분에 담긴 녀석을 보아온 나로서는 당연이 원예종으로 화원에서만 판매하는 줄 알았었다.

헌데 제주도나 남해안 도서지역에는 이 호랑가시나무가 군락을 이루며 서식하고 있다.

완도에는 잎에 결각이 없는 완도호랑가시나무란 녀석도 있다. 헌데 표준식물목록에는 안 보인다.

완도호랑가시는 호랑가시나무와 감탕나무가 자연 상태에서 혼인을 이뤄 만들어진 특산식물이라고 한다.

완도호랑가시의 잎은 서양 사람들이 신성하게 여기는 호랑가시나무와 달리 둥글둥글할 뿐 아니라, 두께도 얇은 편이다.

게다가 잎 가장자리에 돋아난 가시는 날카롭지도 억세지도 않다. 호랑가시나무의 잎에 손을 대면 순간적으로 아픔을 느낄 정도로 따갑지만, 완도호랑가시의 가시는 가시가 느껴지지 않을 정도로 부드럽다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

<호랑가시나무>

잎이 육각형으로 결각이 지고 빳빳한 혁질이다.

결각 끝의 가시는 무척 날카롭고 억세어서 찔리면 통증이 느껴질  정도이다
