어릴 적 크리스마스 카드에 빨간 열매와 뾰족한 가시 있는 잎 그림이 가장 흔한 그림이었다.
지금 생각해 보면 거기 그려져 있던 나무 열매가 호랑가시나무 같다.
호랑가시나무 열매의 잎은 매우 두꺼워서 빳빳하고 잎 결각 끝의 가시가 마치 나무가시 처럼 강하다.
잎은 호생하고 혁질이며 윤채가 있고 타원상 육각형이며 각점이 가시로 되고 길이 3.5~10cm로서 양면에 털이 없으며
표면은 짙은 녹색으로 윤채가 있고 뒷면은 황록색이며 엽병은 길이 5-8mm정도이다.
