배 출항 시간이 촉박한 바쁜 하산 길에도 눈에 들어오는 보리수나무 열매를 담지 않을 수 없다
보리수나무 열매를 일부러 찾지 않았기 때문에 열매 자료가 없는데 마침 자잘한 열매가 발걸음을 잡는다.
바람에 흔들리는 나뭇가지를 잡고 서너 컷 담았다. 에혀~! 바쁘다.
내 기억의 보리수나무 열매는 초등할교 울타리에 있다.
측백나무로 울을 친 학교 울타리에 제법 큰 보리수나무가 한 그루 있었는데
가을 운동회를 할 무렵이면 요 팥알만한 열매가 붉게 색을 내기 시작한다.
우리는 이 열매를 파리똥이라 불렀다.
운동회 연습을 마치고 보리수나무에 매달려서 불그레한 색만 있으면 따서 먹었는데
한 웅큼 입에 털어 넣었을 때 그 땁따름한 단맛이 아직도 혀 끝에서 기억이 된다.
낙엽성 보리수나무는 가시가 있고 전국 각지의 산기슭에 자란다.
낙엽성으로 잎에 점이 없는 민보리수나무, 원예종으로 열매가 매우 큰 뜰보리수나무도 있다.
요즈음은 이 보리수나무보다 열매가 큰 왕보리수나 뜰보리수나무가 건물 마당이나 공원에 흔하게 보인다.
상록성 보리수나무 근연종은 남쪽 지방에서 자라며 잎이 혁질이고 광택이 있으며 덩굴성을 띠기도 한다.
상록성 중에 뒷면이 분백색인 보리밥나무, 갈색을 띤 백색인 보리장나무가 있다.
석가모니가 득도하기 위하여 앉아 있던 보리수나무는 피나무를 말하며 피나무 열매로 염주를 만들기도 한다.
