삼지닥나무(팥꽃나무과 삼지닥나무속)

사찰 주변에 보면 산닥나무나 삼지닥나무가 많이 보인다.

아마도 옛날 사찰에서 껍질을 이용하여 종이를 얻기 위하여 심어 두었던 게 퍼져나가지 않았나 싶다.

 

이 녀석도 껍질이 질겨서 종이를 만드는 원료로 사용한 것으로 추정되는데

우리 어릴 적에 문종이라 부르던 한지는 꾸지나무나 닥나무 껍질이 주 원료였다.

 

초등학교 시절 아버지께서 밭둑에 심겨져 있던 꾸지나무 가지를 잘라와서 

쇠죽 솥 위에 드럼통을 설치하고 자른 가지를 통 안에 차곡차곡 쌓아서 삶아 내면

우리 남매들은 꾸지나무 껍질을 벗기곤 했었다.

 

겨울동안 그렇게 벗긴 껍질 말린 것을 장삿군이 거둬 가곤 했는데

가끔은 그 장삿군이 문종이 한 다발을 주기도 했고 그 문종이로 방문을 바르고 책도 매고 했던 기억이 있다
