복자기와 달리 복장나무는 고도가 높은 산지에서만 볼 수 있어서 강원도 고산에 가서야 만난다.
두 녀석 모두 3소엽을 가지고 있어서 구분이 어렵지만 큰 거치가 3~4개 있는 복자기에 비하여 복장나무는 자잘한 거치를 가지고 있고
복자기는 가지 끝의 산방화서에 3개가 달리며 화경에 갈색 털이 있는데 복장나무는 화경이 매끈하고 햇가지 끝에서 3-5개 취산화서로 핀다.
꽃은 잡성, 양성 또는 이가화로서 5월에 피며 황록색이고 수꽃과 양성화는 딴 그루의 어린 가지 끝에서 3-5개 취산화서로 핀다.
수꽃은 4개의 꽃받침잎과 꽃잎 및 8개의 수술이 더 있다. 자방은 자줏빛이고 암술대는 짧으며 주두는 2가닥이다.
잎은 대생하며 3소엽으로 구성되고 소엽은 긴 타원형 또는 타원상 피침형이며 점첨두 예저이고 길이 5-10cm로서 둔하며
예리한 톱니가 있고 표면은 암록색이며 뒷면은 회색이고 소엽병은 길이 5mm이며 엽병은 털이 없고 붉은빛이 돈다.
시과는 길이 3-3.5cm로서 자갈색이고 털이 없으며 날개는 둔각 또는 거의 직각으로 벌어져 9-10월에 익는다.
높이가 10m에 달하고 소지는 털이 없으며 적갈색이고 수피는 잿빛이며 거칠고 동아가 뾰족하다.
