육지에서 큰망초를 본 적이 없다.
지난 늦가을에 실망초나 큰망초가 아닐까 하고 담아 두었던 녀석도 결국 그냥 망초였고.
이번 제주에서 지천으로 깔려 있던 망초 종류가 이 녀석인데 큰망초라고 생각하고 담아 왔다.
혀꽃이 드러나 보이지 않고 근생옆의 거치가 파상으로 크고 잎에 털이 많이 보인다.
꽃은 7-9월에 피며, 두화는 다수이며 길이 5㎜, 폭 4㎜, 커다란 원추화서를 이룬다.
총포는 난형 또는 원통형이고 폭이 약 4㎜, 회록색이며, 총포편은 3줄로 배열하고, 피침형 ,끝이 예두이며 털이 있다.
설상화의 설상부가 작고 끝에 2치(齒)가 있으며 총포 밖으로 나오지 않는다. 관모(冠毛)는 길이 약 4㎜, 담회갈색이다.
줄기는 높이 80-180㎝, 회색을 띤 암녹색이며 조모(粗毛)가 밀생한다. 남부지방과 제주도에서 자란다.
잎은 어긋나기(互生) 잎차례이며, 근생엽은 피침형 또는 도피침형으로 잎자루가 있고 중거치가 거칠게 있다.
경생엽은 피침형으로 한쪽에 5-9개의 거치가 있고
뒷면에 짧은 털이 있어서 회색을 띤 암녹색이다
. 위쪽의 잎은 선형으로 톱니가 없다.
