꽝꽝나무에 비하여 잎의 크기가 현저하게 작은 녀석이다.
나뭇가지를 태우면 꽝꽝하는 소리를 낸다고 꽝꽝나무라고 했다나 어쨌다나.
열매는 지름 6-7㎜인 구형의 핵과로 10월에 흑색으로 익는다. 길이 4-6mm의 과경이 있다.
=> 좀꽝꽝나무가 꽝꽝나무의 이명으로 처리되었다
잎 길이가 8-14mm로서 표면은 광택이 있는 짙은 녹색이며 뒷면은 연한 녹색이고 작은 선점이 있고 가장자리에 가는 톱니가 있다.
엽병은 길이 1-5mm이다.
