버스로 서백두에서 북백두로 이동하는 도중 점심을 먹으려고 자리잡은 곳에 열매가 하고 곱기에 담았는데
괴불나무가 아닐까 했더니 열매 자루가 길고 잎맥이 다르고 융모가 있는 게 괴불나무가 아니다.
꽃동무가 물앵도나무를 확인해 보라기에 기재문을 확인하니 그런가 보다 싶다.
괴불나무속 열매가 대부분 합생하는 것에 비하여 각시괴불나무, 섬괴불나무, 괴불나무와 이 녀석은 거의 합생을 하지 않는다. 잎과 열매자루에 털이 많고 열매 자루가 긴 점은 섬괴불, 각시괴불과 닮았는데 열매 모양은 괴불나무나 섬괴불나무처럼 완전한 구형이다.
뒷면에 융모가 있고 가장자리가 밋밋하다. 엽병은 길이 5-8mm로서 융모가 있다.
높이가 3m에 달하며 가지의 골속은 비었고, 소지에 융모가 있다.
