지리괴불나무와 왕괴불나무는 중부 이남에 나며 생태적 특징이 매우 비슷하여 구분에 어려워들 하는 것 같다.
왕괴불나무는 어린가지의 선모가 있으나 사라지며 엽병과 화병에 선모가 있는데
지리괴불나무는어린 가지, 엽병, 화경에 털이 없는 것이 왕괴불나무와 다르다.
과경과 엽병에 선모가 보이지 않는다. 올괴불나무나 각시괴불나무의 열매는 선형의 포엽이 열매가 성숙할 때 까지 숙존해 있는데 지리괴불나무 열매에는 포엽이 떨어지고 없다.
지리괴불나무의 열매는 반정도 합체되어 있고 아래 부분을 보면 원반형의 둥그런 꽃받침이 모자처럼 남아 있는데
다른 괴불나무열매에서는 보지 못하는 특징인 듯하다
잎은 대생하며 타원형 또는 긴 타원형이고 점첨두 예저이며 길이 3-10cm, 폭 2-5cm로서
표면에 털이 있으나 없어지고 뒷면에 굳센 털과 선상의 돌기가 있으며
가장자리가 밋밋하고 엽병은 길이 5-15mm로서 털은 없고 선점이 있다.엽병에 선모가 보이지 않는다
화경은 길이 12-15mm로서 선상의 돌기가 있고 털은 없다. 수술은 화관과 길이가 같으며 수술대 기부에 털이 있고 암술대는 수술대와 길이가 같으며 털이 있다. 자방은 중앙 이하가 합쳐지며 선상의 돌기가 있다.
가지는 회색이고 골속이 차 있으며 어린 가지에 선점이 있으나 없어지고 동아는 난형이다.
어린 가지에 털이 아 보이는데 <왕>괴불나무도 어린가지에 선모가 있다가 사라진다고 하니
열매가 성숙하고 있는 시기에는 <왕>이나 <지리>나 둘 다 어린 가지에 선모가 안 보이는 건 같을 것이다.
