왕괴불나무는 강원도에서 흔하게 볼 수가 있다고 하는데 위쪽에서는 만난 적이 없다.
올해도 이 녀석을 목표로 강원도 산골짝을 찾았는데 개체들은 많이 보이지만 열매가 떨어진지 오래다.
내 사는 곳 가까운 백두대산 줄기에도 이 녀석을 본 적이 있다고 꽃동무가 알려주긴 하는데....
내년에 꽃과 열매를 꼭 담도록 목록에 적어 두어야겠다.

| *** 왕괴불나무 L. vidalii var. cerasoides (Nakai) Chun Nakai(1921)는 본 종 제주도 표본을 기준으로 일본산 L. vidalii Fr. et Sav.(왕괴불나무)가 우리나라에 분포하는 것으로 처음 기재하였고, 열매의 유합 정도가 절반 이상인 특징을 들어
지리산 특산으로 L. cerasoides Nakai (지리괴불나무)를 기재한 바 있다.
원 기재문을 재검토하고 일본산 기본종 자료와 비교, 고찰한 바 다음의 차이가 확인되었다.
일본산 L. vidalii Fr. et Sav.(왕괴불나무) (관찰표본, Kyu-karuizawa(旧軽井沢), Nakano
Pref.(長野県) 고도 1000m, May 22, 1965 by H. Kanai & K. Okubo, 동경대 표본실 9505)는
엽병 및 화경에 선점, 밀모가 밀생하고 잎 뒷면 전체와 앞면 맥을 중심으로 선점 및 백밀모가
밀생하며, 자방은 1/2 정도 유합한 특징을 가지고 있었다. 이는 Makino의 기재문과 거의 일치하며,
엽병 및 화경에 선점이 있으나 매우 적으며 잎 상면에는 거의 털이 없고 하면 맥 위에만 털이 밀생하는L. vidalii var. cerasoides (Nakai) Chun 과는 털의 출현부위 및 분포 밀도에서 큰 차이가 난다. 자방의 유합 정도는 L. cerasoides Nakai (지리괴불나무)와 L. vidalii Fr. et Sav.(왕괴불나무)는
절반 가까이로 유사하였으며 일본산 기본종과도 별 차이가 없는 것으로 나타나 자방의 유합
정도는 유용한 식별 형질이 되지 못하였다.
어린 가지와 엽병 및 화경에 털이 없는 것으로 기재된 L. cerasoides Nakai (지리괴불나무)의
특징은 개체내 변이로 인정되어 기본종의 변종에 통합 처리하는 것이 타당하다.
이상의 결과로 우리나라산 왕괴불나무류는 일본산 L. vidalii Fr. et Sav.(왕괴불나무)의 한
변종(L. vidalii var. cerasoides (Nakai) Chun)으로 처리되었다.
