강원도쪽 높은 고개 오르는 도로 옆에는 개벚지나무가 동그란 탁구공같은 화서로 자잘한 꽃을 하얗게 피운다.
꽃잎은 작고 꽃술이 유난이 긴 개벚지나무는 꽃술만 가득한 것 처럼 보인다.
이 녀석은 개벚지나무가 아닌 산개벚지나무다.
개벚지나무는 하나의 화서에 꽃이 10개 ~ 20개 정도로 달리는데, 산개벚지나무는 10개 미만의 꽃을 피운다.
특히 산개벚지나무의 소화경(작은꽃자루)아래에는 톱니를 가진 작은 포엽이 꽃자루를 받쳐주고 있다.
꽃에 가려서 잘 보이지 않지만 열매가 달리면 그 포엽이 도드라져 보인다.
1700고지 이상에는 이렇게 꽃이 피고 있었고
1500고지 정도에도 이미 꽃잎이 다 떨어지고 빨갛게 변한 수술대와 꽃받침이 꽃처럼 매달려 있었다.
꽃자루 아래 톱니가 있는 포엽이 작은 잎처럼 붙어 있다.
이렇게 붉은 수술과 꽃받침을 보고 산개벚지가 맞는가??? 잠시 헷갈렷다.
잎을 비교하고 꽃자루의 포엽을 보고 나서야 산개벚지가 맞다는 확인을 하였는데, 꽃잎이 지면서 색이 붉게 변하는 것 같았다.
전날 종일 퍼부은 비로 1500고지 정도의 산개벚지나무는 꽃잎을 다 떨어뜨리고 수술과 꽃받침만 남아 있었다.
그 모습도 마치 붉은 꽃이 핀 것처럼 고왔다.
관음사 쪽으로 하산하면서 산개벚지나무 열매를 담았다. 한라산 참 재미있는 곳이다.
고도에 따라 꽃이 피고 있고. 꽃이 지고 잇고 이렇게 벌써 열매를 매달고 있는 녀석도 있으니..
열매자루 아래 포엽이 보인다.
