전국 바닷가에 흔하게 자라지만 내륙에서도 자라는 것이 확인이 된다.
제주도에서는 아주 흔하여 대부분 이 녀석이다.
줄기 전체에 분백색이 돌고 높이 40-60cm이며 자르면 불쾌한 냄새가 난다.
열매는 삭과로서 넓은 선형이며 길이 25-35mm, 지름3-4mm이고 염주처럼 잘록 잘록하며
종자는 흑색이고 1줄로 배열되며 돌기가 밀생한다.
열매가 스님의 염주 목걸이 처럼 생겼다.
물론 산괴불주머니 열매도 염주처럼 생겼지만 꽃의 형태가 다르다.
꽃의 형태와 잎이 비슷한 갯괴불주머니는 열매가 넓은 띠 모양으로 불규칙하게 울퉁불퉁하고
종자가 2배열 하는 점이 다르다.
