학자에 따라 갯괴불주머니를 염주괴불주머니의 변종 또는 동일종으로 보는 견해도 있다.
울릉도라는 지형에 따른 염주괴불주머니의 생태형이라는 것인데, 사실 울릉도의 많은 종들의 분류학적 위치가 논란이 있긴 하다
