제주도 계곡부에서 주로 자라는데 줄기에는 줄기 마디에서 공기뿌리를 내어 나무나 바위에 착생한다.
제주도 이외에서는 거문도에서 본 적이 있는데, 제주도 및 남해안 거문도, 손죽도 등 일부 섬 지역에 자생하며,
국 동남부, 일본 혼슈 이남, 타이완 등에 분포한다.
이 녀석은 암수딴그루이다.
꽃은 이삭꽃차례로 피는데 암꽃은 꽃차례가 짧고 수꽃은 띠 처럼 길게 늘어진다.
암꽃은 암술이 1개로 끝이 4갈래로 갈라진다.
늦게까지 달려 있던 열매가 수꽃, 암꽃과 함께 잡혔다.
