해안이나 섬 지역의 도서형은 화관 통부가 내륙형보다 짧고 잎이 넓은 광난형이나 원형으로 밑이 심장형이며 톱니가 얕다.
내륙형은 화관 통부가 더 길고 잎이 타원상 난형으로 섬분꽃나무라 구분하기도 하는데 아무튼 두 녀석이 형태적으로 차이가 있다.
