아왜나무는 나무 자체에 수분을 많이 함유하고 있어서 불에 잘 타지 않는 것으로 알려져 있다.
불이 붙으면 수분이 빠져 나오면서 거품을 만들고 이 거품이 일종의 나무 표면에 차단막을 만들어 불에 잘 타지 않게 한다는 것이다.
이런 특징으로 일본사람들은 ‘거품 내품는 나무’라고 아와부끼라고 했고,
우리 나라 사람들이 일본 발음대로 아와나무라고 부르다가 아왜나무가 되었다고 한다.
가을철 아왜나무 붉은 열매는 여러 번 담은 적이 있는지만 화서는 처음이다.
남부 지역 상록수 중에서도 잎과 화서가 대형인 녀석으로 제 무게를 이기지 못하고 화서가 아래로 고개를 숙이고 있다
아직 시기가 일러서 개화는 하지 않고 봉오리 상태라 아쉬웠지만 그것도 고마운 마음으로 담아 왔다
