생이가래도 포자낭이 달렸다. 물위에 뜨는 부수엽(浮水葉)과 물속의 침수엽이 있는데
뿌리처럼 생긴 녀석은 침수엽으로 정작 뿌리는 없다고 한다. 포자낭은 뿌리 모양을 한 침수엽에 달려 있다.
마디에 잎이 3개씩 윤생하는데 그 중 2개는 대생하여 물위에 뜨는 부수엽으로서 중륵과 측맥이 있으나
1개는 물속에 잠기며 잘게 갈라져서 양분을 흡수하는 뿌리의 역할을 한다.
부수엽은 엽병이 길이 2mm로 짧고 중축 좌우에 우상으로 배열되며 타원형으로서 길이 1-1.5cm, 폭 6-10mm이고 끝이 둥글며
밑부분은 심장저 또는 원저이고 가장자리가 밋밋하며 양면에 원줄기와 더불어 잔털이 있다. 표면은 녹색으로 측맥에 돌기가 있다.
잎 뒷면은 회갈색으로 거센 짧은 털이 있다. 침수엽은 수염뿌리 모양으로 가늘게 갈라졌다.
가을철에는 물속에 잠기고 갈라진 잎 밑부분에서 소지가 갈라지며 털로 덮인 주머니같은 것이 생기고
그 안에서 크고 작은 포자낭이 형성된다.
