부유성 수생식물로 포자를 터뜨리는 양치식물 중 한 녀석이다
정수성 수생식물 : 물가에 나는 갈대, 부들, 줄 등
부엽성 수생식물 : 수면에 떠있는 부수엽을 발달시키는 연,순채, 마름 등
침수성 수생식물 : 영양기관이 물에 잠겨있는 검정말, 나사말, 말즘 등
부유성 수생식물 : 수중이나 수면에 떠돌아다니는 생이가래, 개구리밥, 좀개구리밥, 통발 등
이 녀석은 마디에 잎이 3개씩 윤생하는데 그 중 2개는 대생하여 물위에 뜨는 부수엽으로 중륵과 측맥이 있고
1개는 물속에 잠기며 잘게 갈라져서 양분을 흡수하는 뿌리의 역할을 한다.
물 위에 뜨는 부수엽은 엽병이 길이 2mm로 짧고 중축 좌우에 우상으로 배열되며 타원형으로서
끝이 둥글며 밑부분은 심장저 또는 원저이고 가장자리가 밋밋하며 양면에 원줄기와 더불어 잔털이 있고 표면은 녹색으로 측맥에 돌기가 있다.
이 녀석을 뒤집어 보면 털이 부숭부숭한 뿌리 같은 게 보이는데 그게 뿌리가 아니라 잎인 거다
잎 뒷면은 회갈색으로 거센 짧은 털이 있다. 침수엽은 수염뿌리 모양으로 가늘게 갈라졌다.
가을철에는 물속에 잠기고 갈라진 잎 밑부분에서 소지가 갈라지며 털로 덮인 주머니같은 것이 생기고 그 안에서 크고 작은 포자낭이 형성된다.
