물 속에서는 잎만 동동 뜨지만 물 밖에서 살게 되면
마치 네잎 클로버라 불리던 토끼풀과 착각이 들 정도로 전초가 위로 길게 자라는 습지식물로
이름이 가래라서 마치 가래과인 것처럼 착각을 하지만
잎자루에서 나온 줄기 끝에 포자주머니가 달려서 포자로 번식하는 양치식물 고사리목 네가래과이다
혹시나 이 녀석 포자낭을 보려고 바닥을 뒤져 봤지만 기대는 꽝이었다.
종자는 포자로 5~6월경 엽병 밑 부분에서 1개의 가지가 갈라지고, 다시 2~3개로 갈라져 끝에 각각 1개씩 작은 주머니가 생기며,
그 안에서 크고 작은 포자낭이 생긴다.
