남한강 물굽이 치는 어느 강변에 단양쑥부쟁이가 참 많았던 걸로 기억이 된다.
헌데 지금은 강변 자갈밭이 많이 사라져 버리고 단양쑥부쟁이들의 모습이 많이 줄어 들었다.
4대 강 개발로 보가 설치되고 강 하상의 모래 자갈을 긁어 내고 수변을 정비하는 바람에
강 습지나 하천변의 자연스럽게 조성된 자연이 인공적인 모습으로 바뀌어 버렸다.
물이 제대로 흐르지 못하고 보에 갇히면서 올해는 녹조류가 급속하게 번식이 되어서 많은 문제를 일으키고 있단다.
옛날에는 물을 다스리는 것도 나랏님의 중요한 능력으로 여겼었다.
헌데 그 물을 다스리는 것을 무리하게 진행하다 보니 오히려 환경 파괴의 역효과가 나타나게 되는 것이다.
4대강 개발과는 별도로 이 단양쑥부쟁이를 두고 난리를 치던 국회의원들과 환경단체들의 행태에 대하여는 별로 응원을 보내고 싶지가 않다.
하도 난리를 치기에 나는 이 곳이 완전히 물에 잠겨버리는 줄 알았다.
강 바닥을 파내어서 강이 깊어졌고 그 바람에 강변이 많이 좁아진 변화는 있었지만
그래도 여기 저기 단양쑥부쟁이가 꽃을 피우고 있었다.
쑥부쟁이는 종자로 번식을 하기 때문에 몇 해만 지나면 예전의 풍성한 모습을 되찾을 수가 있다.
아직 발견되지는 않았지만 단양쑥부쟁이는 여기저기 많이 서식을 하고 있으리라 짐작이 된다
반가운 사실로 벌써 남한강을 따라 몇 군데에서 단양쑥부쟁이 서식지가 나타나기도 하였다.
그런데 단양쑥부쟁이에 대한 기본 지식조차 없이
단양이 서식처가 사라지고 멸종해 버린다고 이 곳을 찾아와서 언론플레이를 하던 모 국회원의 모습이 아직도 기억이 난다.
자신의 입지를 세우고 주목을 받기 위하여 애꿎은 단양이를 이용한 인기몰이 같은 짓들은 그만 했으면 좋겠다.
총포편만 보면 얼핏 개쑥부쟁이와 비슷하지만
단양이는 잎이 매우 좁고 길며 총포편도 선형으로 무척 길어서 다른 쑥부쟁이들과 차별화 된다.
붉은색을 띠는 갓털도 개쑥부쟁이보다 더 길다.
