섬쑥부쟁이(국화과 참취속)

엄니 살아 계실 적 동네 어르신들과 모여서 10원짜리를 놓고 화투를 치는 일이 유일한 낙이셨다.

놀이방은 유복자 아들을 잘 키워서 초등학교 선생을 하는 게 큰 자랑이시던 어르신 댁이었다.

 

그 어르신은 아들 손자 자랑을 꽤 자주 하셨던 모양이라 마실 나갔다 오신 엄니는 그게 영 못마땅해 하셨다.

누군가 한 사람이 손주 자랑이라도 할라 치면 그 집 주인 어르신은 냉큼 말을 가로 채어서 매번 같은 내용인 손주 자랑을 또 늘여 놓는다는 것이다.

 

엄니도 5남매 잘 키워서 막내 아들은 비행기를 몰고 다니는 기장이라 막내 덕에 비행기는 공짜로 타고 다니고

맏딸은 교장까지 하는데도 섣불리 자랑도 못하셨던 모양이다. 그 집 아들은 평교사였기 때문에 딸년 자랑을 입밖에 낼 수가 없었던 것이라.

 

놀이방 집 주인은 셩격이 꽤 까탈스러우셨는데다가 주인 텃세가 좀 있어서

어르신들 마다 집 주인과 틀어져서 한 번씩은 발길을 끊곤 하셨는데 엄니도 한 동안 그 놀이방에 나가지 않은 적이 있었다.

 

그 자랑스런 아들은 명예 퇴직 후 얼마 되지 않아서 스스로 생을 마감해 버려서 모친의 가슴에 못을 박아 버렸다.

우울증이 있었다고 한다.

 

섬쑥부쟁이는 봄날 어린 잎을 뜯어서 무침나물로 먹으면 식감도 좋지만 향이 참 좋은 녀석이다

울릉도에서는 부지깽이나물이라 하여 산비탈에 재배를 하고 있는 소득작물이다.

 

집 마당에 꽃을 피우고 있는 이 녀석이 그 놀이방 집에서 엄니가 얻어 온 녀석이다.

엄니 돌아가신 후에도 음나무 그늘 아래서 여전하게 잘 자라고 있다. 이 녀석 꽃이 피면 엄니 생각이 난다.
