열매는 길쭉하고 자그마한 도토리 처럼 생긴 상록수로 열매를 갈라보니 하얀 속살이 마치 잣처럼 고소한 맛이 느껴졌다.
알이 너무 잘아서 실속이 없어서 그런지 이 맛있는 열매가 도로 바닥에 지천으로 깔려 있다.
제주 시가지의 도로변에 가로수로 많이 심겨져 있는데 워낙 많은 열매는 새들의 풍성한 먹이가 된다.
꽃은 암수한그루로 수꽃이삭은 햇가지 윗부분의 옆겨드랑이에, 암꽃 이삭은 밑부분의 잎겨드랑이에 달린다.
수꽃은 꽃덮이 5-6장, 수술 15여 개이며 암꽃은 암술대 3개이다. 열매는 견과, 난형, 깍정이는 주머니 모양, 돌기가 있다.
개화기는 5월, 결실기는 다음 해 10월이다.
잎은 긴타원형으로 어긋나고 두터우며 광택이 있고 잎 상반부에 물경성 톱니가 있으며 잎 끝이 길쭉하게 빠진다.
껍질은 검은회색이고 잎은 어긋나며 2줄로 배열, 피침형, 긴 타원형, 물결 모양의 톱니가 있다.
광택이 있고, 뒷면에 비늘 모양의 털이 있으며, 연갈색이거나 흰빛이 난다.
